Noah's Ark Scans press release says charred wood came from about 30 feet deep and that Atila confirmed the radar results
· by Noah's Ark Scans, Andrew Jones
In a GlobeNewswire press release, Noah's Ark Scans said charred wood was recovered almost 30 feet deep in the Durupınar formation and sent for carbon-14 dating and species identification, and that Prof. Cenker Atila had reviewed and confirmed Khosrow Bakhtar's preliminary radar results.
What is claimed
Noah's Ark Scans says the wood's depth shows it is not recent debris, and that its charring may have preserved it.
What is established
No species identification or carbon-14 result had been published as of 28 October, and the project's own release says no firm conclusions should be drawn before then.
Details
The release says the wood is not surface debris or mudflow material because of its depth, and that Atila will release photographs. Andrew Jones is quoted as saying the find could be "the charred remains of Noah's Ark" or of "a shepherd's campfire", and that its age is unknown until testing is done. The Daily Mail reported the same day, quoting Jones that both charred and uncharred wood were recovered and Bakhtar that the radar features are "not geologic related". The release's account of Atila confirming the radar results is the group's; at the 15 October symposium Atila was reported as saying the data were not sufficient for a conclusion and the features might be geological. No statement from Atila or Sivas Cumhuriyet University on the press release was found by 28 October.
