Turkey's Chamber of Geological Engineers says the Durupınar claims lack scientific support

· by TMMOB Chamber of Geological Engineers (JMO)

TMMOB's Chamber of Geological Engineers (JMO) said the formation should be assessed as a product of landslide and erosion processes, and that no scientifically verified evidence links it to Noah's Flood.

What is claimed

The JMO says a ship-like shape is not evidence of a ship, that the landslide and geology of the area support a natural origin, and that unverified claims should not be presented as discoveries.

What is established

The statement is a professional body's position paper, not new fieldwork; the 2026 project's laboratory results had not been published.

Details

The statement, issued by the chamber's Cultural Geology and Geological Heritage Working Group, cites MTA's 1986 geological, geomorphological and geophysical studies of the Telçeker landslide as a main basis for treating the formation as natural. It says geophysical anomalies alone cannot establish an archaeological or geological origin, that drill samples cannot be presented as confirming a historical account without their location, sampling method, analysis results and stratigraphic context, and asks that the data be shared with the scientific community. It also asks that any drilling take landslide hazard and natural-heritage protection into account. The statement does not name the research team.
