What is established
The account is entirely hearsay; Williams said his notes and a supporting newspaper clipping were destroyed in a 1940 fire, and no copy of the clipping has been found.
Details
Williams described the story in a 1952 letter; Wikipedia says it was not widely circulated until Violet Cummings' books in the 1970s (her Noah's Ark: Fable or Fact? is dated 1973). The date here marks that circulation.
